When it comes to selecting a design firm for a critical project, professionalism is a key factor that can make or break the success of the endeavor. The Human Service Agency (HSA) in Watertown, South Dakota, experienced firsthand the exceptional professionalism of Team TSP during their journey to the new Serenity Hills and CARE Facility.

A Trusted Partnership
The collaboration between HSA and TSP began with an industry partner’s recommendation. Kari Johnston, Executive Director of HSA, was already familiar with TSP through some previous interactions. This prior relationship laid a strong foundation of trust and confidence in TSP’s capabilities.

Comprehensive Services and Expertise
TSP’s professionalism and multidisciplinary approach were evident from the very beginning. HSA needed space and started by looking at existing buildings in the area. TSP conducted a thorough facility assessment of a former motel building, providing architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering services, along with a conceptual estimate of what it might take to convert it for HSA’s needs. This comprehensive approach helped HSA understand the costs and challenges associated with renovating the existing facility, ultimately leading to the decision to build a new facility.

Client-Centered Approach
Throughout the project, TSP maintained constant communication, ensuring that HSA’s needs and concerns were addressed promptly. Johnston highlighted how TSP’s team was always reassuring, helpful, and never pushy. They sought HSA’s input on every aspect of the project while sharing their expertise to guide the process.

Attention to Detail and Thoughtful Solutions
TSP’s attention to detail and thoughtful solutions were key factors in the success of the project. Johnston praised the team’s ability to understand HSA’s vision for a wellness-oriented environment and their creative approach to making it a reality. The design of the new facility emphasized a clinical and wellness atmosphere, avoiding an institutionalized or hospital-like setting. The facility includes features such as high ceilings, ample natural light, and separate drop-off entries for each program, enhancing privacy and comfort for the residents and providing a warm, welcoming, and healing environment for individuals with severe and persistent mental illness.

Positive Impact on the Community
The new Serenity Hills and CARE Facility has had a significant positive impact on the community. The facility maintains a 4-bed crisis stabilization center and a 4-bed detox facility. These new additions are part of South Dakota’s allocated funding for Appropriate Regional Facilities (ARF). This new facility is part of the state’s initiative to create more space for individuals experiencing a psychiatric crisis while keeping them closer to home.

Conclusion
The professionalism of TSP was instrumental in the successful completion of the Serenity Hills and CARE Facility for the Human Service Agency. “I am so grateful that we chose TSP for our design. They were so professional and thorough from the very beginning and so helpful. I could not have gotten through this project without their leadership and their kindness,” Johnston said.  “The facility TSP designed for us has been nothing but miraculous. I can’t say enough good things about it.” TSP’s multidisciplinary expertise, client-centered approach, attention to detail, and thoughtful solutions resulted in a facility that not only meets the needs of the community, but also sets a high standard for future projects. HSA’s experience with TSP serves as a testament to the firm’s dedication to excellence and professionalism in every aspect of their work.
