TSP partnered with Stockwell Engineers to create an city-owned outdoor aquatic that will provide decades of summer activities, fun, and exercise. The Huether Family Aquatics Center is named for Yankton native and former Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether and his family, who made a major donation to the project that will benefit children and adults.
Work on the aquatics center began in spring 2020, when crews removed a 70-year-old swimming pool on the same site. The 50-meter outdoor pool will offer eight lanes. Because designers sized the lap pool to host swim meets, they also created a deck wide enough to allow for bleacher installation. A recreation pool features a large play structure near the zero-depth entry. Adjacent to that space are a lazy river and a series of slides, including one with a surface-trough landing. A splash pad, shade structures, upgraded tables and deck furniture, and new landscaping complete the grounds.
TSP designed a pair of buildings for the aquatics center. A small mechanical building houses the equipment needed to operate the pools. A larger building includes separate locker rooms for men and women, plus family-style changing rooms. The building’s administration portion offers a lifeguard station, ticket booth, and a three-direction concession stand that serves both the pool and visitors to the adjacent park.
The aquatics center opened on Memorial Day weekend in 2021.
