Complex projects demand an even closer working relationship among architecture and engineering leaders on the design team. In these cases, TSP convenes what we call a “First 1%” session as soon as possible after our initial project kick-off meeting with an owner.
A project kick-off meeting allows the design team to hear directly from the client and key stakeholders before assigning priority to any project challenges. The feedback from the kick-off gives us a deeper understanding of our client’s mission, culture, and project goals. This vital input also enables us to develop a framework centered on what matters most to the client. It keeps us accountable to client needs when intricate technical details threaten to bog us down in the logistics.
Traditionally, projects in our industry have sequentially engaged disciplines starting with architecture and expanding to include engineering and other partners. However, this phased approach often results in repeated efforts to catch up on previous discussions or designs, leading to inefficiencies.
We have a better way.
Focusing the entire team
At TSP, our “First 1%” session breaks away from this convention by gathering the entire project team—owners, architects, engineers, and external consultants—simultaneously. This collective effort fosters a comprehensive discussion where everyone examines the project holistically from the outset. Together, we address potential challenges, leverage diverse perspectives, and establish a unified direction early on.
THE SECRET TO GETTING AHEAD: GETTING STARTED
Preparation for the session includes compiling key takeaways from the kick-off meeting, which serve as starting points for discussions during the “First 1%.” Led by senior design leaders from each discipline, these discussions delve into specific project requirements and potential implications for each area of expertise. Through collaborative dialogue and critical design-thinking, the team identifies and preemptively resolves issues that could impact project success.
Different perspectives, one direction
By the session’s conclusion, all project team members reconvene to share insights on project features and systems, ensuring alignment with overarching project goals. This inclusive approach not only enhances communication and understanding across disciplines but also generates a comprehensive roadmap for addressing project complexities from the outset.
In essence, the “First 1%” session embodies TSP’s proactive stance towards integrated design, setting a solid foundation for collaboration and innovation throughout the project lifecycle.
