The Augustana University Art Department has presented its highest award – the Harold Spitznagel Medal for Achievement in Art – to students Randi Inez Eggum and Quinn Ward.
The medal was presented during the opening reception of the Augustana Senior Show at the Eide/Dalrymple Gallery on April 25.
The Spitznagel Medal is given to artists who demonstrate the highest standards of excellence in their artistic endeavors throughout their careers at Augustana. Bestowed only occasionally, the award was first presented in 1959.
Harold Spitznagel established his one-man architectural practice in his hometown of Sioux Falls in June 1930. He developed numerous friendships and lasting business relationships, many of which were built on the Augustana campus.
His first project at Augustana involved a master planning effort in 1945. The firm Spitznagel started 95 years ago is now a multidisciplinary architecture, engineering, planning, and interior design firm that has collaborated on more than 150 projects at Augustana University.
Spitznagel’s strong connection to the art world and his friendship with Augustana art professors Ogden Dalrymple, Palmer Eide, Robert Aldern, and Carl Grupp provided the lasting inspiration for an award to recognize outstanding art students.
