As TSP prepares to close out its 95th anniversary year, the milestone offers a moment to reflect on the enduring privilege of shaping the places where people heal, learn, and come together.

For nearly a century, partnerships with hospitals, school districts, municipalities, and civic organizations across the Midwest have helped create environments that strengthen well-being and resilience.

The story is one of steady evolution: from a one-man shop and hand-drafted plans to today’s integrated digital design, collaborative delivery models, and evidence-based solutions.

Founded in Sioux Falls in 1930, the architectural practice was shaped by grit and determination during the Great Depression. Engineering and interior disciplines were brought into the firm in the 1950s, while a client-first philosophy guided by core values has remained consistent since the beginning.

Through decades of change, the firm’s purpose has been constant: to make our communities better, by design.

To mark the end of this anniversary year, team members were invited to share what 95 years represents in TSP’s journey, its relationships, and future impact.

Their perspectives capture both the firm’s heritage and its aspirations for the next chapter.

Brenda Moore, Chief Financial Officer
“Ninety-five years reflects careful stewardship and a culture built for the long term. As an ESOP, every TSP employee has a stake in the firm’s success, creating stability and shared responsibility. This ownership mindset ensures that decisions support clients, communities, and team members alike, not just for today, but decades into the future. Investments in talent, technology, and partnerships strengthen our ability to make a positive, lasting impact for the next generation.”

Tadd Holt, Principal | Structural Engineer
“It is quite special to look back on how TSP has affected communities throughout the area by designing incredible buildings that have stood the test of time. Our work is about showing up consistently, listening, solving problems, and being dependable. Longevity doesn’t come from big statements — it comes from doing good work, project after project, and earning trust one relationship at a time.”

Chase Kramer, Director of Design | Architect
“From the beginning, our company founder, Harold Spitznagel, made it a point to set aside 1 percent of project budget for interior or exterior art when it enhanced the design. As an undergraduate art major, that commitment resonates deeply with me, and as an Augustana University graduate, I take pride in our impact on campus. Nearly every building constructed between 1940 and 2020 was designed or influenced by Spitznagel and the firm; and Spitz’s friendship with Augustana art professors inspired the creation of an award to recognize outstanding artists. I have had the privilege of continuing that legacy by working on a number of projects to help shape the campus for future generations.”

Von Petersen, Principal | Architect
“The TSP legacy provides perspective and purpose. We’re inspired to push boundaries, embrace new technologies, and continue designing solutions that meet the evolving needs of the people and organizations we serve.”

Tim Jensen, Principal | Sioux Falls Office Leader | Electrical Engineer
“Wrapping up our 95th anniversary year is a reminder of the decades of lessons learned from past projects, and we can apply these lessons to client projects today. Representing the firm with pride inspires a commitment to honor the vision and hard work of the people who laid the foundation for its success. While the anniversary may be coming to a close, the responsibility to uphold the firm’s legacy and deliver exceptional work continues every day.”

Mark Averett, Principal | Architect
“Being part of a legacy firm gives perspective to the work we do each day. Whether we’re serving healthcare clients or other critical sectors, we’re not just designing buildings, but shaping experiences, supporting people, and strengthening communities. That understanding deepens when you’re building on decades of trust and relationships.”

Jared Nesje, Principal | Chief Executive Officer
“While honoring the firm’s rich legacy, we are focused on the future and the innovations and impactful solutions yet to come. TSP is built on forward-thinking and grounded in 95 years of experience. The policies, procedures, and traditions we’ve inherited give us confidence and direction, while inspiring us to be more creative, curious, and ambitious as we look ahead. This culture also makes TSP a genuinely fun place to work, where people enjoy collaborating, learning, and building something meaningful together.”
