The splash pad at the Great Plains Zoo is a popular attraction for children of all ages and accessible for people of varying levels of mobility.
In partnership with the Zoo, the City of Sioux Falls, and Stockwell Engineers, TSP provided architectural; structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering; and interior design services for a restroom facility and mechanical room building at the splash pad.
Since opening, the new restroom facility has been well received. The year-round bathrooms include five stalls each for men and women in addition to two family restrooms, and one of the family restrooms is equipped with an adult changing table. After opening, the Zoo received a request from the public to consider installing a motorized, height-adjustable adult changing table, which replaced the smaller, fixed-height table.
The interior finishes were designed for easy cleaning and maintenance with quartz flooring and epoxy-painted walls. Exterior handwashing sinks on the building provide a convenient place for visitors to wash hands after feeding the animals at the nearby farm animal exhibit. A unique full-body dryer is located at the building for guests to use after enjoying the splashpad.
The 25’ x 35’ mechanical room features separate chemical storage rooms.
TSP is honored to have helped the Great Plains Zoo grow over the years. Our collaboration dates to the early 1960s, when a long-range plan was completed before the zoo opened in June 1963. Since then, the firm has continued to partner with the zoo for various attractions.
