Overview: Wolf habitat renovation at Bramble Park Zoo

The Bramble Park Zoo completely renovated its wolf habitat, part of a broader initiative toward accreditation with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). The project replaced the original wolf facility, built in 1989, which no longer met modern standards for animal care and welfare.

Modernized design for animal care and climate performance

Designed by TSP, Inc., the upgraded habitat doubles indoor holding space and adds modern life-safety and animal-care systems tailored to South Dakota’s often-demanding climate. Improvements include enhanced heating, automatic drinkers to ensure continuous access to fresh water, and running water as well as drainage systems to streamline cleaning and promote animal comfort.

A key feature of the renovation is a new glass viewing area, where guests can safely stand just inches from the wolves. The design strengthens guest engagement by offering visitors a better understanding of wolf behavior and providing insight into daily interaction and animal care by zoo staff.

The renovated habitat opened in June 2026, marking the return of the wolves to Bramble Park Zoo.
